Nestled in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) has been equipping students, alumni, and employees with the knowledge and experience to transform themselves, the community, and the world for over 55 years. The College’s comprehensive program of instruction includes associate degrees and certificates in occupational/technical and college/university transfer programs. Non-credit workforce training and special interest classes for individuals, business, and industry are also offered. BRCC is seeking two Engagement Coaches to provide academic monitoring and support to a caseload of students enrolled in identified high-risk “gateway” courses. Part-time positions, in general, are limited to 1500 hours within a 12-month period, with no health benefits. This position is expected to work 30 hours a week, on-site, during the fall and spring semesters. There is potential eligibility for educational assistance for BRCC classes and job-related training and/or certifications. Job duties include: Work with course faculty to focus on students in designated gateway courses that are exhibiting signs of academic distress or disconnection from BRCC Interact with students via a variety of modalities in designated gateway courses as the first line of support to provide academic skills support and coaching Connect students with specific college resources and personnel to address both academic and non-academic related challenges (finances, mental health, home or life challenges) Partner with faculty to communicate to students about course related deadlines Work with faculty to monitor student attendance and grades, to determine if interventions are needed to prevent a student from failing or withdrawing from their course Assist faculty in the promotion and tracking of supplemental instruction sessions Assist in the collection of assessment, outreach, and communications data Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Special Assignments	May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications	Experience as a contributing member of a team Ability to create and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, and staff in order to provide a high level of quality service and support Demonstrates strong, clear, and effective written and oral communication skills Demonstrates ability to guide students through academic and personal challenges Excellent organizational and recording-keeping skills and attention to detail Strong work ethic Proficient in using and learning different types of technology Commitment to and enthusiasm for the community college mission and environment Excellent customer service skills and a passion for helping others
Additional Consideration	Advising, counseling, intervention and/or related experience Experience working with diverse populations Experience in higher education environment An understanding of student learning barriers and strategies to overcome them Knowledge of academic and student programs, student supports/resources, and academic supports/resources Experience navigating institutional policies and procedures
