Job Overview
The Office of Research Radiation Safety Office at the University of Cincinnati is seeking a Staff Health Physics Tech 1-U/ The Radiation Safety Office ensures the safe and compliant use of radioactive material and radiation generating equipment for the University and it affiliate partners. This position will be using basic instruments like a voltmeter, radiation service instruments, i.e., Geiger Mueller, Scintillation Counter. A successful candidate will possess good written and verbal communication skills, have computer experience (Microsoft Office-Word, Excel etc.), good customer service skills, the ability to use basic hand tools, and able to work with a team.
Essential Functions
Receive, survey, record and distribute radioactive material packages as instructed by supervisors (i.e., review, inspect and determine placement of packages; conducting appropriate contamination surveys and record; and perform necessary follow-up with appropriate departments). Assist in the collection, processing, disposal, and shipment of radioactive waste in accordance with applicable rules and regulations. Survey laboratories for radioactive contamination and violation of the University of Cincinnati Radiation Control and Safety Program. Provide radiation safety assistance to hospitals as directed (i.e., monitor patient rooms and adjacent areas and implement the necessary precautions. Maintain inventory of radioactive materials and other records. Calibrate survey equipment under direct supervision. Keep the Assistant Radiation Safety Officer or Radiation Safety Officer informed of any violations of government regulations or University Radiation Safety policy. Complete on-call technician certification and act as first responder for the Radiation Safety Office. Instruct Radiation Safety personnel and others as necessary on radiation safety policies and procedures. Perform duties as assigned by the Radiation Safety Officer and/or Assistant Radiation Safety Officer.
Minimum Requirements
- Associate’s degree in Physical of Biological Science; -OR- High school diploma and two (2) years’ experience.
- Must have acceptable driving record and able to obtain a valid HAZMAT Commercial Driver’s License within three (3) months of employment.
- Able to work an on-call rotation.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment
- Must be able to demonstrate the ability to bend, reach, pull, push, and lift up to 40 pounds without mechanical assistance.
Starting Pay Rate: $20.91 per hour
Post Probationary Rate: $21.96 per hour
